School plays a central role in the lives of young people and is the environment in which they spend the majority of their time and so, when teens are struggling with mental health and/or substance abuse conditions, they often experience increased stress and difficulties with their academic responsibilities. For this reason, we incorporate an academic plan into all of our treatment programs at Paradigm Treatment Centers, in order to address their current academic needs. This often includes the work teens must complete from their home schools, as well as additional study efforts teens make, in order to grow as students, during their time here. To provide a focused environment, dedicated to this academic time, each Paradigm Treatment Center location has an On Site Classroom, which is directed by a professional, credentialed teacher.
Upon admission to Paradigm Treatment Centers, all teens receive a thorough diagnostic assessment, which includes information regarding teens’ current academic needs and goals. The teens’ treatment team then coordinates with the On Site Classroom teacher, in order to determine the unique academic goals which teens will spend time working on, while at Paradigm. This includes both academic assignments, homework, and studying, as well as tools and resources such as addressing stress, study tools, organization, and more. This dedicated, focused, and supportive classroom environment proves to be extremely beneficial to teens, and often teens are able to return to their local schools caught up, if not ahead of their classmates.
One of the foundational approaches to our treatment at Paradigm Treatment Centers is to work with teens to address their deeper core needs, including the stressors in their lives. With regard to academics, we work with teens to help them recognize what sources of academic stress they might have, such as particular dynamics, environments, or challenges they’re experiencing. These kinds of insights can prove incredibly powerful for teens to understand what they need, in order to succeed. And to this end, we also teach teens practical habits which will allow them to lessen these conflicts and improve their ability to succeed as students. This includes thing such as study habits, organizational strategies, and stress reduction practices.
Lastly, one of the most important benefits of our On Site Classroom and our Paradigm Treatment Center academic support program in general is the teens’ therapists work with the On Site Classroom teacher, in order to coordinate efforts and care so that the work teens are doing in their therapy sessions and in the classroom will be synergistic toward helping teens improve their overall well-being. This holistic mindset and commitment is truly at the foundation of every aspect of treatment, as we work to help young people find the relief and support they need to be empowered to live their very best and happiest lives.
