1. We Treat the Optimal Number of Young People Per Residence

One of the clear advantages we have at Paradigm Treatment Centers is the limited number of youth we have in each location allows us to provide extensive daily individual care.  In treatment facilities that have large populations, this kind of individual time simply isn’t possible.  However, these larger programs are often well-marketed, less expensive options, which sometimes attracts insurance companies and parents alike.  The sad truth however, is the time teens spend time in broad, mass-produced curriculums that are designed according to symptoms and supervised by paraprofessionals.  It’s the kind of setting that makes it easy for introverted or quieter teens to have their needs overlooked, while more extroverted teens might go to extreme lengths to get the attention they need.  And sadly, it’s often the kind of treatment experience in which the real emotional factors and stressors in teens’ lives go virtually unaddressed.  It’s for all of these reasons that we’re so committed at Paradigm Treatment Centers to ensuring a small household population, which promotes the best and most individualized treatment experience for each teen here.

2. We Offer The Highest Staff to Client Ratio in the Nation

In addition to maintaining small house populations at each of our Paradigm Treatment Centers, we also provide a high staff to client ratio, and strive to maintain a 1:3 staff to teen ratio during waking hours.  The strong presence of our staff ensures that all teens receive the time and attention they need, and also enhances our ability to continue adapting and expanding on treatment, to make it as individualized as possible.

3. Our Treatment Teams Are World-Class

Of all the things that make Paradigm Treatment Centers so special, it’s our team that makes us most proud, every day.  All Paradigm team members are either credentialed or licensed in their specialties and have spent their education and their careers working to help young people and their families.  In order to be clear and open about who your teens will be working with while in treatment, all of our team members are listed on our websites, with bio information and photographs.  Whereas some treatment centers make it quite difficult to understand who will be providing treatment services, we not only offer this information but are very proud of it.  What we’ve found is there are a number of reasons and treatment provider may want to avoid giving this information to families and all of them are concerning.  We also warn against any programs that run multiple programs and list their staff together, as a way of suggesting that teens will be working with the entire team of people.  Not only is this practice misleading, but unfair to teens and families alike.

At Paradigm Treatment Centers, many families are happy to learn that the core of our treatment team has been working together for more than 15 years.  This experience designing and providing treatment together allows us to approach families with the confidence and comfort that only develops after years of built trust and respect.  The result is that paradigm Treatment Centers stand above the rest, as a treatment environment that is safe, supportive, and uniquely special.

4. We Have A Stringent Admissions Screening

In addition to the question of who will be providing treatment, it’s also extremely important to ask who your teen might be in treatment with.  Because of a lack of admissions criteria in so many teen treatment facilities, we’ve heard many unfortunate stories about teens entering treatment with their own struggles, only to learn new bad behaviors and/or coping mechanisms, from other kids in the program.  At Paradigm Treatment Centers, we take the treatment environment very seriously and have a rigorous admission screenings, in order to protect and sustain it.  We do not accept any young people with a history of gang violence, sexual perpetrators, history of violence, or any behaviors that might risk the emotional and physical safety and security of everyone in the program.

5. Treatment That Goes Deeper Than Behaviors

In working with young people for over 15 years, we strongly believe that the only way to successfully and responsibly provide treatment is to address the deeper emotional factors connected with teens’ problematic behaviors.  If a young person is struggling with something such as substance abuse, self-harm, behavioral challenges, and/or an eating disorder, it’s usually because there are complicated thoughts and feelings teens are suffering from.  When programs only work to change these behaviors, it’s only a matter of time before teens will return to the emotional struggles, which have gone unfortunately unaddressed.  By working with teens and helping them to make valuable insights into themselves that will lead them to positive changes in their lives, the result is the changes teens will make will be meaningful and sustainable.

6. Treatment Follows Comprehensive Diagnostic Testing

When a young person is admitted to a Paradigm Treatment Center, they receive a comprehensive diagnostic interview, which includes a Medical Evaluation, a Psychiatric Evaluation, a Psychological Assessment, and an Education and Nutritional Assessment.  These assessments are carried out within 48 hours of admission and form the foundation of the teen’s individual treatment plan.  We believe that in order to be successful, treatment design requires this kind of thorough assessment, so that therapists can focus on all aspects of teens’ current health and well-being.  As surprising as it may be, this practice is not the case at many treatment centers.  Unfortunately, many treatment providers don’t have teens meet with a psychiatrist or psychologist into well into their treatment program, which waste teens’ valuable energy and time, not to mention the family’s resources.

7. Paradigm Treatment Centers are Ranked Best in Adolescent Treatment More Often Than any Other Programs

While we believe that the highest standards of care should be those we set for ourselves, it’s still important to us that third party entities agree we are providing the best therapeutic care available.  Paradigm Treatment Centers are rated the best in teen treatment more often than any other provider.  These rankings include, but aren’t limited to, Teen Advocacy Groups, Teen Professional and Consumer Organizations, and Parent and School Counselor’s Organizations. We’re also very proud that an integral aspect of our high rankings is due to the consistent satisfaction of our alumni families.

Some of these alumni families make themselves available to speak with prospective clients, and offer their experiences and insights with you.  Additionally, some of these alumni families participated in other treatment programs prior to Paradigm and can offer feedback on how we compare to other providers.  We find that it’s often extremely helpful and insightful for prospective families to speak to our alumni and learn, first-hand, what makes Paradigm so special.

8. Multimodal Family Services

At Paradigm Treatment Centers, we greatly respect and value the role that each family member plays.  We also understand that teen treatment affects the whole family and as such, we build in multiple types of family services to all of our teen treatment plans.  The inclusion of parents and family members in treatment is never to place blame or remove responsibility, but rather to resolve conflicts and find new ways of communicating which promotes positive change, growth, and healing, for the whole family.

At all of our Paradigm Treatment Center locations, we offer individual family therapy, multi-family group therapy, sibling support services, Parent Effectiveness training, and on-going parent support services and after care.  Each Saturday, we host family day, with includes a hosted luncheon.  In instances where family members are unable to participate in-person, we also offer services by Skype or telephonically, in order to accommodate the particular needs of each family.

Lastly, our Paradigm team is available to provide support and answer questions to families 24 hours a day, every day of the year.

9. Comprehensive Academic Support Services

We provide individualized academic support as part of each teen’s treatment plan and are committed to providing teens with the help they need to reach their academic goals.  Upon admission to Paradigm Treatment Centers, all teens receive an educational assessment used to identify their needs, goals, and abilities.  Teens will then spend some time each day in our on-site accelerated learning classroom, which is led by a credentialed teacher.  For those teens that benefit from one-on-one instruction or help in a certain area, we also offer individual tutoring, by students of nearby universities.  The goal of our academic program is always to support teens to become current, if not ahead of, their current studies in school, as well as to help them identify practical new habits that will help to reduce academic stress, while improving their performance.  This really does look different for each teen, since abilities, needs, and struggles vary so much.  With this in mind, our services extend to support teens with learning differences; teens in AP/honors course; teens currently applying to universities; and teens currently not enrolled in school.  In cases where it’s helpful, our teacher and/or tutors are more than willing to coordinate with the teen’s school teachers and we can also provide proctored testing.

 10. Our Treatment is Brief and Intensive

Our treatment philosophy is that adolescent treatment should be brief and intensive, so that teens can identify and make meaningful changes and then return to their lives, as soon as possible.  This is why 30 days is widely considered to be the norm for adolescent treatment stay and also why we believe that each day and hour of treatment should be carefully considered, appreciated, and designed for maximum therapeutic value.  One of our average daily schedules proves this to be true, as each day is full of a number of different individual and group therapy sessions and activities designed to meet the teen’s therapeutic goals.

Despite this, there are many treatment centers that require a minimum of more than 45 days even before conducting any diagnostic testing and sometimes even before meeting the adolescent.  It’s important to recognize that these programs not only aren’t intensive in nature, but very likely use wasteful time-fillers such as making teens do excessive chores, busy work, and/or other free community meetings, instead of therapeutic practices.  In many cases such as these, teens receive minimum individual therapy (about once or twice a week) and are often much less able to remain focus and engaged in their treatment work.

11. Treatment That Results in Sustainable Change

At Paradigm Treatment Centers, we believe that in order to help teens make changes that last, the efforts and changes they make in treatment must be directly translatable to their daily lives.  For this reason, we do not use any phase systems, point systems, or other old-fashioned forms of behavior modification.

While these types of systems were proven to have no value as long as four decades ago, a shocking number of treatment programs continue to implement them, likely because the methods are cheap, require little resources, and are easier to carry out.  Meaningful teen treatment, however, requires a much more sophisticated approach, in order to help teens achieve authentic change.

At Paradigm Treatment centers, we are dedicated to doing the difficult work of providing individualized treatment, so that the time teens spend here with us directly translates to happier, healthier lives.

12. We Provide a Large Variety of Clinical Services

In order to allow us to provide each teen with an individualized treatment plan that best meets his or her unique needs, personality, goals, interests, and strengths, we draw from a number of modalities and provide a large number of treatment options.  What we’ve found in our many years working with young people is that by providing them with many different opportunities to engage, we are much more able to allow teens to find their own ways of organically and meaningfully participating in their own treatment work.

To meet the wide range of diverse needs of all teens, the services we offer include, but are not limited to: Teen Recreational Therapy, Teen Equine Therapy, Teen Art Therapy, Teen Dance Therapy, Teen Detoxification Massage, Teen Yoga Therapy, Teen Meditation Therapy, Teen Somatic Therapy, Teen Narrative Therapy, Teen Bio Feedback Therapy, Teen Acupuncture Therapy, Psychological Assessments, Psychiatric Evaluations, Educational Evaluations, Neurotransmitter Testing, Individual Therapy, Family Therapy, Multi-Family Therapy, Psycho-Education Groups, and more.

13. It’s The Therapist’s Role to Motivate Teens

Teens enter treatment from a number of different avenues.  Some young people seek treatment out for themselves; others are pressed by parents or loved ones; and some teens arrive from other external forces.  Research shows that unfortunately it’s very common for teens to wait extensive periods of time before getting help, either because teens themselves are afraid to face what they’re experiencing or because of the false popular myth that teens must “hit bottom” before getting treatment.  Not only is this attitude untrue but also dangerous, because sometimes teens hitting bottom can mean causing serious harm or even death.  At Paradigm Treatment Centers, we strongly recommend that teens get professional help as early as possible, in order to minimize the progression of symptoms and to limit the amount of time teens struggle, alone.  Along these lines, we also believe that it’s our role as treatment providers to help teens to find the motivation and value in their own treatment, and to help them put forth the efforts necessary to make their time here at Paradigm meaningful and powerful.

14. We Provide Gender Specific Treatment, not Gender Exclusive Treatment

Part of our treatment approach is we design treatment to be directly translatable and meaningful to teens’ everyday lives, back at home.  Along these lines, our experience has shown us that for the vast majority of teens, gender exclusive treatment isn’t the best option, as it doesn’t mirror the environments teens live in.  At Paradigm, we provide treatment in a co-gendered setting that allows us to work with teens to address and process any issues that might arise, related to gender issues.  We find these opportunities to be important and valuable, in teens’ development.  At the same time, we also tailor treatment to be specific to teens and their experiences in every way, including issues or aspects which may be related to their gender.

15. We Empower Teens and Families Through Treatment

When selecting a treatment provider, it’s very important to understand the treatment philosophy the program takes.  At Paradigm Treatment Centers, we believe in empowering young people and families through treatment, which is the best way to ensure lasting, meaningful results.  Unfortunately, many treatment providers approach treatment from a place of discipline and correction, aiming to break young people down into changing their behaviors.  Not only do we not believe this is effective but can also be extremely harmful.  Every aspect of our treatment experience is designed to lift young people up, to help them remember the value in themselves and their lives, and from this place of value, to invest time and energy into their improved health and well-being.  By providing treatment in this way, teens will not just temporarily correct behaviors out of fear, but will become motivated to make lasting changes, in order to live better lives.

16. Our Treatment Incorporates Teens’ Interests and Strengths

In line with our philosophy of empowering young people and families through treatment, we also design and implement treatment to encourage teens’ interests and strengths.  Unfortunately, so many treatment programs practice a negative approach toward treatment, focusing on teens’ negative symptoms, problematic behaviors, and deficits.  While it’s important to recognize the areas teens are struggling in, this approach can often discourage teens, while failing to recognize positive attributes teens have.  At Paradigm Treatment Centers, we believe that the young people and families that come to us are competent, strong, resilient people and capable of tremendous efforts and change.  Not only has our experience shown us this is a much more useful approach but research by teachers, psychiatrists, and psychologists show that a strength-based approach to therapy is dramatically better than a deficit-based approach.

17. We Do Not Engage an Either/Or Treatment Approach

There are many treatment providers that identify themselves as only using a single approach to treatment, such as the “Medical Model,” or the “12 Step Model.”  Unfortunately, it’s common for the more singular for these providers’ approach to become, the more broad treatment is for the teens, as the rigidity of the approach allows more omissions and oversights.  While we recognize these models have helped many people, there are other young people for whom neither of these models works best for, and therefore strict adherence to a label can limit opportunities.

At Paradigm Treatment Centers, we’re committed to a treatment approach which considers and treats each young person individually.  By approaching treatment in this way, we’re able to carefully consider and decide what kinds of modalities, services, and activities might best suit a teen’s particular needs.  The outcome is treatment can be much more precise and holistic, which allows teens to experience more thorough and lasting recovery.

18. We Exclusively Provide Residential Adolescent Treatment

Paradigm Treatment Centers are committed solely to providing the highest quality residential treatment for young people and as such, we are singularly focused and specialized.  All of our team members have spent their education and careers dedicated toward working with young people, and the approaches and programs we’ve created are designed in accordance to the unique struggles and experiences of this population.  Moreover, our residential treatment environments have been designed to serve as the best possible setting for the young people to have an engaging and authentic treatment experience.  In our many years of experience, all of these factors make a huge difference in the overall feel and success of treatment.  This is in stark contrast to treatment programs that serve both young people and adults, and/or that simply apply general, broad treatment approaches to teens.  Moreover, it’s common for providers to have teams with experience in the field, but not with adolescents, which again, makes a big difference.

19. We Practice Collaborative Treatment

At Paradigm, we’re committed to collaboration in order to provide the best and most thorough treatment possible.  While we provide expertise and experience, we also respect that teens and family members are often experts on themselves and along these lines, we ask you to be full partners in the design and implementation of your treatment experience here with us.

Moreover, we also welcome opportunities to collaborate with other therapists or mentors the teens may have been working with at home, and who are invested in the best interests and well-being of the teens.  We have often enjoyed working with teachers, counselors, mentors, coaches, and many others who provide valuable support and guidance to teens, both throughout the treatment process and also, once teens return home.

20. We Provide Holistic Treatment

Paradigm Treatment Centers are dedicated to providing holistic adolescent treatment.  To us, this means that every treatment plan not only successfully addresses a teen’s particular substance abuse and/or mental health conditions, but also considers and treats the teen’s Physical Health, Emotional Health, Family Health, Spiritual Health, Social Health, and Educational Needs.  We strongly believe that successful teen treatment can only occur when teens are evaluated and treated as whole beings, with an array of unique needs.  To address all aspects of each teen, we draw upon the best combination of traditional and alternative therapy approaches, including individual therapy sessions, every day.

21. We Provide Free Aftercare Services

At Paradigm Treatment Centers, we believe that treatment should be intensive and brief, so teens can make healthy changes and return to their lives, as soon as possible.  However, in order to make this possible and to ensure the continuing progress and growth teens make at Paradigm, aftercare services and ongoing support are integral.  In order to ensure a teen’s safety, well-being, and continued growth following their time here at Paradigm, we provide free ongoing after care services, including therapy sessions, family support services, and coordination with teens’ local treatment providers.
