12-Step Program

12-Step ProgramAt Paradigm Treatment Centers, we recognize the value of the 12-Step Program as an effective tool in addressing Teen Substance Abuse conditions. Because we design each teen treatment plan individually, we incorporate the 12-Step Program as one tool among many in our Teen Addiction Treatment plans, in instances where we believe it will best suit the particular needs of the teen. Whereas many teen treatment centers rely heavily upon the 12-Step Program as the cornerstone of substance abuse treatment, our approach is much more individualized in nature, in that we incorporate a wide number of approaches and therapeutic modalities, in order to best address teens’ core needs which are at the root of their current struggles and behaviors.

The 12-Step Program was originally designed by Alcoholics Anonymous as a set of guiding principles that outline the necessary steps to recover from addiction. The steps include the following:

  • Admitting that one can’t control one’s addiction or compulsion
  • Recognizing a higher power that can provide strength
  • Examining past errors with the help of a sponsor (experienced member)
  •  Making amends for these past errors
  • Learning to live a new life with a new code of behavior
  • Helping others who suffer from similar addictions or behaviors

As evidenced in the steps above, one of the benefits of the 12-Step program is the support and community teens can gain, within the 12-Step community. Most youth in Teen Addiction Treatment struggle with having to change certain peer friendships and relationships, which only revolved around using together. In these instances, the 12-Step program and community can be very useful in helping to fill that social void, and provide teens with positive, supportive sources of encouragement and understanding, as they continue in their recovery.

At Paradigm Treatment Centers, there is no single Teen Addiction Treatment plan that we use and we have no preconceived notions of what therapy approach to implement, until we conduct our extensive diagnostic interview, and identify the unique needs of the teen. Then, in designing a treatment plan that will best need these unique needs, we incorporate the 12-Step program when we believe it will help teens to achieve and maintain sobriety. This is one way in which Paradigm Treatment Centers stand apart from many teen treatment providers, who incorporate the 12-Step program automatically into any and all treatment plans that involve substance abuse. Unfortunately, this kind of broad approach to treatment is often unsuccessful in addressing the underlying reasons for teens using drugs and/or alcohol in the first place, often which are related to mental or emotional stress and/or mental health conditions such as Teen Anxiety, Teen Depression, and/or Teen PTSD. In these cases, while the 12-Step program may be useful in helping to curb teens’ behaviors temporarily, the teens won’t be able to sustain sobriety, until these deeper emotional core needs are met. Because of this very common and complex relationship between teen mental health and teen substance abuse, we find that an individualized treatment approach is necessary in order to recognize the true nature of the addictive behaviors, as well as the emotional factors at play.

It’s worth noting that the individualized, precise, and patient approach to treatment at Paradigm Treatment Centers is only possible because of our commitment to a high staff-to-teen ratio, which includes individual therapy sessions every day, while teens are in treatment. The result of this time, attention, and precision of care we provide here at Paradigm Treatment Centers is that teens are engaged and active in their own recovery every day, both while at paradigm and once they return home.
